Harbour porpoise spotted at Sutton on Sea

VISITORS to Sutton on Sea beach on Saturday afternoon were treated to a sighting of what was believed to be a harbour porpoise.

Ian Benford from Lincoln was visiting Sutton on Sea with his young family when they spotted the creature, also known as a common porpoise, in the water around midday.

He said: "We knew it was a dolphin of some sort but couldn't really believe our eyes at first and it stayed for about an hour much to the delight of everyone on the beach. We think it was a common porpoise and it seemed to be feeding just 20-30 metres from the shore."

Ian added: "It's the first time we've seen one off the Lincolnshire coast and wondered how rare a sighting it was."

The Harbour Porpoise is a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The species is on the World Conservation Union's "vulnerable" list – with around 200 of the animals, which are up to 6ft long, believed to live along the stretch of coast from Lincolnshire up to Northumberland.
