THE End Of Term Concert given by the Intermediate Orchestra, The Jazz Factory and several soloists was a great success at Louth Methodist Church last Wednesday.
The large audience was introduced to the recently formed orchestra with Carmen Suite by Bizet, arranged by Tony Mason.
The orchestra coped well with the difficult rhythm sections and balanced well as an ensemble.
They also played a selection of themes from films including ET, Star Wars, and Jurassic Park.
They really seemed to enjoy playing these and the audience gave great appreciation.
There were several debut solo performances by pupils in their first year - these were Charlotte Manton on violin, Eleanor Brocklesby and David Amey on piano.
All three coped very well and produced musical playing.
We also heard from several more seasoned performers now in year nine. They were Emma Gorst with her very sweet voice, Alice Chalmers, Bethany Clarke and Amy Baker all on the piano and playing a wide variety of styles from Baroque to Blues.
An excellent performance was heard from Alice and Bethany when they were joined by their trio partner Eleanor Brocklesby as they played a piano trio entitled Just Reminiscing by Laura Shur.
They managed to capture the reflective mood perfectly.
It was good to hear some string solos from some year eleven students -especially the Viola which was played Bethany Sampson.
She played a piece called Tambourin by Gossec.
Eleanor Ordish on the Violin played the theme from Schindler's List by John Williams from memory.
She produced a very haunting opening and a very sonorous tone quality.
Alice Speirs gave a virtuosic performance of Czardas by Monti.
The change of tempi seeming effortless to her whilst being accompanied on the piano by Andrew Shaw, Head of Music.
The Alto Saxophone was well represented by soloists Jonathan Parker in year eleven and Georgina Hastings in year twelve.
Jonathan played an Aria by Bossa. This piece was beautifully phrased with good breath control and he portrayed the melancholy mood very well.
One of the highlights of the evening was performed by Georgina as she played Samba Triste by Richard Rodney Bennett.
She coped easily with the difficult rhythms and played very musically. She was accompanied by Andrew Amey and together they produced an excellent ensemble.
The concert was brought to a close by a medley of numbers by the school jazz band called the Jazz Factory, led by Mr Amey.
The band members really excelled at these with some impressive solos by the Alto Sax and Trumpet.
An enjoyable evening was had by all - a real credit to the music teachers and peripatetic staff who bring the whole evening together in such a professional manner.
