EDITOR - I strongly object to the proposed site for the Sainsbury's supermarket in Eve Street, Louth.
For years this undisturbed land has provided habitat for wildlife of many varieties especially hedgehogs.
Surrounding old properties, trees, tennis court, fishing pond, houses, gardens and river have been ideal town environment for creatures now thr
eatened with eviction from our historic Louth.
More important than unnecessary new shops, they are rightfully part of its unique and rural character.
I began rehabilitating hedgehogs nearly 30 years ago in the days when those recovered could be returned to Louth's wealth of pony paddocks, vegetable gardens and orchards.
Most of these are now gone and the space over crammed with intense building development, asphalt, gravel and pavement with absolutely no regard for wildlife or consequential flooding.
The land destined for Sainsbury's would blitz habitat enjoyed by the owl, thrush, blackbird, starling, swallow, house martin, robin, wren, hedge and house sparrow, chaffinch, greenfinch, assorted frogs and toads, mallard duck, sparrow hawk, bat and hedgehog.
All these have been observed, encouraged and appreciated by local nature lovers who, like me, prefer this charming aspect of Louth to yet another impersonal supermarket.
Please respect our declining wildlife along with our long established, adequate, Louth based family shops.
