Lincoln School of Art exhibition
A free public exhibition will mark the 150th anniversary of the Lincoln School of Art, bringing into view the city’s remarkable artistic legacy.
The Lincoln School of Art (LSA) was founded on February 2 1863 when it hosted its opening class at the Lincoln Corn Exchange. A century and a half later, the current Lincoln School of Art and Design, now part of the University of Lincoln, will recognise the huge contribution that Lincoln alumni have made to the art world over the decades.
A week-long exhibition will be held at the University’s Greestone Building on Lindum Hill, showcasing the LSA’s 150-year timeline through a selection of artwork, ephemera and historical displays.
With William T Warrener, who became the illustrious subject of The Englishman at the Moulin Rouge by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, as well as internationally renowned artists William Logsdail and George Carline, among the Lincoln School of Art’s former students, the exhibition is an opportunity for art lovers across the region to celebrate Lincoln’s wealth of artistic heritage.
The showcase, Lincoln School of Art: A Celebration of 150 Years, is open to the public from Monday 4th February to Friday 8th February 2013. The exhibition will be preceded by a private reception on Saturday 2nd February to commemorate the anniversary.
The Lincoln School of Art was one of the first art schools of its kind in Britain and was celebrated as a forward-thinking leader in art education. It instructed in French Impressionism long before it was widely accepted within the UK and embraced the growth of the region’s industry within its curriculum.
To commemorate the work and progress of staff and students past and present, the Greestone Building’s exhibition will display historical photography, mapping the evolution of the LSA and its impact upon the region, and will feature the local Lucas family, which had three generations attend the School.
A second exhibition will be held at The Usher Gallery in March, and will feature artwork from the Lincoln School of Art’s distinguished alumni. Past and Present: A Celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Lincoln School of Art will be open to the public from Saturday March 16.
Lincoln School of Art: A Celebration of 150 Years will be open to the public from now until Thursday February 7 between 10am to 4pm, and on Friday February 8 between 10am and 12noon, at the Greestone Building, Lindum Hill, Lincoln.
