Louth Film Club screens sprightly Hong Kong thriller
Sparrow at Louth Film Club.
Louth Film Club will be showing a stylish and sprightly thriller from Hong Kong at the Playhouse Cinema’s newly-refurbished screen two.
Directed by Johnnie To, Sparrow tells the story of a beautiful woman sent to spy on a group of pickpockets by her ageing gangster boss, who thinks they are trespassing on his territory.
Beautifully filmed and choreographed, Sparrow has been compared by some film reviewers to Jacques Demy’s The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg and indeed umbrellas feature in the film’s exquisite climax.
Sparrow, in Cantonese and Mandarin with subtitles, is Certificate 12. The show starts at 7.30pm. Non-members are welcome, paying the normal Playhouse Cinema ticket prices.
The film is being shown on Monday, January 21 and will be the last film of the current club year.
The club’s new programme of films, for February to January 2014, is available, free, from Off The Beaten Tracks record shop at 36 Aswell Street, Louth, where you can also join the club, or from Louth Library or the Tourist Information Office.
Programmes and membership forms can also be picked up at the Playhouse Cinema and if you arrive in good time before Monday’s film you can sign up for membership and take immediate advantage of members’ cheaper ticket prices.
