Striking art exhibition at South Somercotes

High Tide.

High Tide.

An art exhibition this weekend will encourage audiences to view ancient church buildings in new ways through the prism of contemporary art practice.

St Peter’s Church in South Somercotes are inviting people to experience ‘Altered’; a series of unique collaborations between artists and parish churches in Lincolnshire.

‘Altered’ strives to inspire all who are involved in the daily lives of churches in Lincolnshire to develop their own collaborations with artists, responding to structures, locations, hidden corners and re-telling the stories deep within the fabric of Lincolnshire Churches.

The first commission in the series features Lincolnshire artist, photographer and film-maker, Gary Woods, focusing on the extensive history of salt production in the Lincolnshire marshes surrounding the village of South Somercotes.

Through a series of digital projections, the advancing North Sea tide will be depicted across the floor of the nave at St. Peters, where the sea water will appear to encroach upon the tiles of the floor.

Further projections of fire, bubbling water and crystallising salt will accompany a specially-commissioned sound installation encompassing cries of gulls and waders, waves, bubbling salterns and the crackling of the hearth.

As a photographer, Woods’ work is held in many permanent collections including The Getty Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Biblioteque Nationale. In 2000, Woods was Artist in Residence at the BBC and his most recent exhibitions have been at The British Council in Abuja, Nigeria and at the Abbey Walk gallery in Grimsby.

The exhibition is on this Saturday and Sunday, November 24 and 25 from 2pm to 9pm.

It costs £4 for adults, £2 concessions, and free for children under 16.

Tickets available at the door or from www.terryotooletheatre.org.uk or by calling 01522 883311.
