Windmills of Lincolnshire book published

JON Sass has spent a lifetime in windmills – now he has produced a book entitled Windmills of Lincolnshire.

And there is no-one more knowledgeable to write about mills in a county where there are more mills to focus on than any other in Britain.

Lincolnshire can also boast the highest number of operating windmills in the UK.

In the 1970s, Jon led the successful campaign to restore Wrawby windmill near Brigg as the last working postmill in Lincolnshire.

Soon after, he left the family car firm at Monument Works in Brigg and went to work in America – on windmill restoration.

But since returning to live and work back in the Wolds, Jon has continued his involvement with Wrawby.

Now retired and living in Nettleton, he serves as secretary of the Lincolnshire Mill Group.

In his book, Jon studies the development of windmills, their uses, their ultimate decline and the men who originally built them.

But this is also a story of windmills long gone, of driving down a country
lane, pulling up in a field gateway where a mill once stood.

There are tales of greeting an old farmer who was quite astonished that anybody knew of the remains of a water-mill in the corner of his farm buildings.

The book is superbly illustrated and printed on high gloss paper which brings out the best of these treasures of Lincolnshire. Waltham and Wrawby Mills are among those featured, but there are also other tales – such as a pumping mill once at the town cemetery in Grimsby for draining the graves before they could be used.

This is a book with a personal touch applied by a man who really does know his mills – our mills – Lincolnshire mills, and is a lovely read.

Windmills of Lincolnshire is published and distributed by Stenlake Publishing Ltd, priced £18. Call 01290 551122 or email: sales@stenlake.co.uk .
