THE New London Opera Group’s annual Spring concert in Louth, Cox & Box and Songs of Gilbert & Sullivan, is at the Riverhead Theatre on Saturday March 10 at 7.30pm.
For this year’s visit to the town the New London Opera Group presents a fully staged performance of Arthur Sullivan’s first comic opera, Cox & Box.
The opera tells the tale of Sergeant Bouncer, who unscrupulously lets the same room in his lodging house to a hatter (Cox) who works all day and a printer (Box) who works all night. All goes well until one day, when Cox is given a day off. A farcical comedy of mixed identities, formidable fiancés, faked suicide, and dishonest gambling ensues!
In the second half of the programme, the gentlemen of the Cox and Box cast will be joined by a soprano and mezzo-soprano in a concert of songs, duets and concerted numbers from the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, including The Mikado, The Pirates of Penzance and The Gondoliers.
The concert will blend popular favourites and interesting rarities.
There will also be a special preview of the hotly anticipated production of Utopia Limited, which the group will bring to Louth in June.
