MABLETHORPE could be twinned with Walt Disney World Florida if a local couple's dream of winning a competition for the resort comes true.

Richard and Jenny Borthwick from Sutton on Sea have entered the resort into an online contest called 'Twin Your Town with Walt Disney World' - and if successful, Mablethorpe would receive global publicity and be given a presence at the famous American family park.

Richard said: "We have as good a chance as any to win this, and if we did there would be signs for Mablethorpe put up in Disney World – you can't buy that kind of publicity for the area."

The Disney site states: "Walt Disney World is searching for a UK town, city or village to become its twin town!" and entrants have to upload a photo of their town and describe in 25 words why it would be the ideal 'twin' to Disney World.

Jenny's entry reads: "Magical Mablethorpe seaside town, unique world-class beach-huts, we could create Disney themed ones. Fun, historic, family, disabled-friendly. Our mascot (little) Mermaid.'

Others all around the country have entered including Edinburgh, Lincoln, Cardiff, Newquay, Grimsby, and Hull.

The successful town will receive a Disney-themed party for local residents and the entrant wins a family holiday to the Florida resort.

Richard, who owns Sharky's Bar on Mablethorpe seafront, said: "If we won I would change the theme of the bar to Disney and put a Disney character-shaped beach hut outside."

He concluded: "This competition is very high profile - it was even mentioned on the Jonathan Ross show a few weeks ago, so if we win Mablethorpe will get global publicity which can only be a good thing for the resort."

The closing date for entries was Sunday with the winner being notified on December 7.
