A BUSY road in Sandilands has been described as a 'race track' by a young schoolgirl who regularly witnesses speeding motorists as she crosses it to reach her bus stop.

Grace Gurbutt, 13, attends John Spendluffe School in Alford, and is one of several children who use the bus stop on Huttoft Road. She is now escorted across the road each morning by her parents Alan Gurbutt and Rebecca Underwood from Crabtree Lane.

Alan said: "The A52 road by the junctions to Crabtree Lane and Bluestone Way is an accident waiting to happen. Just the other morning we were crossing and saw a car speeding towards us on the other side with no lights on in foggy conditions.

"Young people travelling by bus to Huttoft Primary School, John Spendluffe and Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Alford are at real risk of being killed by careless motorists."

The busy road has a 30mph speed restriction in force, but the family say most mornings there are vehicles travelling at speeds much greater, and often overtaking as they pass the bus stop and nearby junctions.

Grace's younger sister Lilly, 10, who attends Huttoft Primary school, travels by car each morning. Alan added: "Next year she will be also using this bus stop" and added: "it's like playing Russian roulette with careless motorists."

Other observations the family have made include drivers using mobile phones at the wheel and dangerous parking outside schools.

PC Jon Jones, Community Beat Manager for Mablethorpe, Sutton on Sea and Alford Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "We know there are concerns about speeding around Mablethorpe and we are tackling the problem by education and enforcement.

"Officers with speeding equipment are being deployed in targeted areas at specific times and a number of motorists have already been issued with speeding tickets."

Graeme Butler, Highways Projects Officer for Lincolnshire County Council, said: "We strongly urge all motorists using the route to obey the limit and drive to the conditions, for the safety of everyone."

Alan concluded: "I really want people to think how they would feel if they made a fatal error of judgement just to save a few extra minutes in the morning?"

Grace's poem -

Why don't you think? Do you really care?
Standing at the bus stop-
Waiting-
For the school bus,
I breathe a sigh of relief.
I've made it safely across the race track, once again.
No lights in the fog,
I worry,
When you're in such a hurry.
Speeding in the freezing cold,
So keen to get to work, to school wherever...
Overtaking in an enormous rush,
30mph; Junction,
A complete loss of function.
Adrenaline in your bloodstream:
Push.
Push.
Push.
A child attempts to cross the road,
The atmosphere is static,
You try to respond-
You're paralysed-
You try to brake.
It's.
Too.
Late.
