Few couples can say they’ve reached 70 years of happy marriage, but one Louth couple certainly can.
Vera and Sidney Lilley celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary on Thursday, receiving a card from Her Majesty the Queen for the occasion.
The couple met all those years ago at a camp in Waltham, when Vera was a search light operator in the Army and Sidney was in RAF’s Bomber Command.
They married on April 18, 1943 at St James’s Church in Louth, which Vera remembers was a gloriously sunny day.
“We were very lucky, it was a beautiful day,” she said.
“There’s no real secret to a happy marriage, it’s ups and downs.”
The happy couple have four children and nine grandchildren, and despite now living in separate care homes, their relationship remains as bright as ever.
