Monday 8am - LOUTH has been awarded Fairtrade Town status and a major celebration is to be held in the town centre.
Louth is the first town in East Lindsey to win Fairtrade status and only the third, after Stamford and Gainsborough, in Lincolnshire.
To qualify it had to satisfy the Fairtrade Foundation, which campaigns for a better deal for Third World producers, that it fulfilled several criteria.
These included a good range of Fairtrade products in shops, cafés and catering establishments; the use of Fairtrade products by a number of local workplaces, educational establishments, faith communities and other community organisations; and the establishment of a Fairtrade steering group, meeting regularly to ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade Town status.
David Newlove, chairman of Louth Fairtrade Town Steering Group, said: "This is a real achievement. The town has done very well, we are now leading East Lindsey."
Louth officially becomes a Fairtrade Town on Saturday and to celebrate a Fairtrade Marketplace will be held at Louth Methodist Church in Nichol Hill from 10am to 1pm.
It will feature Fairtrade arts and crafts activities for all ages, live music by Gambian djembe drummer Njega, Fairtrade cakes and coffee and stalls run by Oxfam, Off The Beaten Tracks record shop, Louth Wholefood Co-Op, People Tree, Compassion UK, Christian Aid and Ethiopian Fairtrade Group from Market Rasen.
Saturday is also World Fair Trade Day.
