Tuesday 8am - LOUTH celebrated getting Fairtrade Town status on Saturday.
A Fairtrade Marketplace was held at Louth Methodist Church in Nichol Hill.
It featured Fairtrade arts and crafts activities, music by Gambian djembe drummer Njega, Fairtrade cakes and coffee and stalls run by Oxfam, Off The Beaten Tracks record shop, Louth Wholefood Co-op, People Tree, Compassion UK, Christian Aid and Ethiopian Fairtrade Group from Market Rasen.
Louth is the first town in East Lindsey to win Fairtrade status and only the third, after Stamford and Gainsborough, in Lincolnshire.
To qualify it had to satisfy the Fairtrade Foundation, which campaigns for a better deal for Third World producers, that it fulfilled several criteria.
These included a good range of Fairtrade products in shops, cafés and catering establishments; the use of Fairtrade products by a number of local workplaces, educational establishments, faith communities and other community organisations; and the establishment of a Fairtrade steering group, meeting regularly to ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade Town status.
