Tuesday 1.55pm - A RECORD number of rare moths have been discovered at the Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve.
More than four times the expected amount of an extremely rare moth larvae were found during monitoring sessions at the reserve.
Moth enthusiasts gathered at the free Marsh Moth survey training day, hosted by Natural England and organised by the Butterfly Conservation Society.
Seventy six larvae were found from the 12 litter piles used in the survey, with up to 17 larvae being found in one pile as opposed to the usual average of four.
The event led by moth expert Dr Paul Waring gave nature lovers a great opportunity to learn how to find, indentify and conduct surveys for the rare moth Marsh Moth, which is only known to inhabit two sites across the British Isles.
Natural England Senior Reserve Manager Simon Cooter said: "This area's natural habitat is perfect breeding ground for the Marsh Moth and other wildlife."
