Beach huts at Mablethorpe to get £90,000 revamp
How the new re-vamped Mablethorpe seafront will look when the beach hut programme is completed.
INVESTMENT worth £90,000 will be ploughed into Mablethorpe’s beach huts in a bid to keep tourists coming to the coast.
East Lindsey District Council rolled out the plans yesterday as part of a drive to improve the quality of the council-owned huts and provide more opportunities for private ownership.
Subject to planning approval new huts with disabled access and improved security will be built behind Queen’s Garden Square in time to be rented out this summer.
These will also act as ‘show huts’ to promote a possible 15 more huts to be built at Queen’s Park subject to sales, expected to be around £12,000, being made.
Those 15 would replace three remaining arson-hit huts at Queen’s Park plus another five which have already been ‘condemned’.
“Making this investment now is important in terms of managing the beach huts we own and ensuring our coastal resorts remain welcoming to visitors,” said Coun Craig Leyland, Portfolio Holder for the Economy.
The district council currently has a stock of 44 huts at Queen’s Park, this would be reduced to 30 under the scheme but those remaining will undergo an enhanced maintenance plan.
Beach huts have become a prominent feature of British seaside resorts recently, and have become synonymous with Mablethorpe and Sutton thanks in part to the annual Bathing Beauties Festival. Huts have been known to sell for £18,000 locally.
Coun Leyland added: “In undertaking the programme of work we will ensure we keep any disruption to a minimum so as not to impact upon businesses or visitors.”
A council spokesperson said there has already been significant interest in the new beach huts.
