A vacant strip of land in Louth which has been earmarked as the site of a new supermarket development is falling into disrepair, according to councillors.

Concerns were raised at the Louth Town Council meeting on March 12 over the former Brown’s Garage site in Newmarket, with one councillor claiming vermin had been spotted roaming on the land.

The site, which is adjacent to Watts Lane, is currently the centre of a controversial Sainsbury’s supermarket and housing bid by Metaris Properties Ltd, which was rejected by East Lindsey District Council in June 2012 but has since gone to appeal.

At present the site is often used by youngsters who gather in the evenings and some councillors have pointed the finger of blame at them for the state of the site.

Raising the issue, Louth’s mayor Coun Jill Makinson-Sanders said: “I am concerned that the wall has come down, there are bricks strewn all over the site and I have heard vermin has been spotted on that corner.”

“It’s ridiculous,” said Coun Margaret Ottaway.

“We have been trying to get a skate park on there. I think the parents or the young people themselves should clean it up for their own benefit.”

Coun Eileen Ballard also urged the young people themselves to take up the baton.

“Who’s made the mess?” She asked.

“It’s really annoying. They should be responsible for what they have done.”

But Coun Laura Stephenson said efforts should be made towards encouraging development on the site.

“What we really need is to encourage the developers who have their eye on the site to come up with something suitable,” she told the meeting.
