Last orders for historic Louth pub
A WELL-known pub in Louth which had a strong presence in the town for over 170 years has called last orders for the final time.
The Woodman public house located in Eastgate has recently closed its doors and has already been sold, but it is unclear at this time who has bought it.
The pub has a long history which dates back to the early 1840s.
It was a coach house in the early 1900s ferrying goods and the public into town from nearby villages.
It once had a unique setting for a pub as it was neighbours to the free methodist chapel. The Woodman was also the headquarters for Louth Cycle Club in the 1940s.
Over the years it has been well known for promoting local bands.
Jerry Gale, of the Louth and District Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), said: “A pub closed is something we don’t want to happen as it gives less choice to the public. We don’t want to lose any of the pubs in town.”
A number of local residents have expressed their views on the closure of the Woodman.
Matt Yeomans said: “It’s a massive shame. It was always an icon whilst I was growing up, having all the young local bands play their debut acts.
“It’s a great loss as there are very few places that have any character like the Woodman had.”
Jason Garrett said: “More use could be made of the site as it sits on a large plot which could easily provide vital parking space which the town needs.”
