Tesco have scrapped their plan to build a new store in Station Road in Mablethorpe, opting for an alternative plan to build in Golf Road.

The supermarket giant had been granted planning permission to build a new store on the site of the Station Road Sports Centre, and had agreed to build a new sports facility for the town in Stanley Avenue.

But this morning it has been announced that they will now build the supermarket as part of the new Lindum development on land off Golf Road which includes 180 new homes and a petrol station.

Tesco say the change of location to Golf Road will allow Tesco to deliver a larger store and create 200 new jobs, 70 more than was originally planned.

Simon Petar, corporate affairs manager at Tesco, said: “We are really excited about these improved plans.

“The additional jobs together with the planned expansion of Mablethorpe make this a natural fit and we look forward to explaining our plans in more detail over the coming weeks and months with the wider Mablethorpe community.”

Paul McSorley, group property director for the Lincoln-based Lindum Group, said: “We are excited to help bring a new Tesco store forward for the town in the right location, servicing existing and new residents.

“The site provides for plenty of parking and a petrol filling station, next door to the proposed pub/restaurant.

“The superstore forms an integral part of our development and helps deliver the infrastructure and section 106 benefits we have agreed to as part of the planning process.”

East Lindsey District Council’s portfolio holder for culture, leisure and tourism, Councillor Adam Grist, said: “Tesco has taken its decision on a commercial basis, as any major retailer would.

“Station Sports Centre remains very much open for business and I’m sure it will continue to be well used by the community.”
