Driver fled scene after ploughing into South Somercotes Post Office

A driver who crashed into a village shop and drove off leaving his registration plate behind, returned later to try and retrieve it, Skegness court heard.

Lee David Ross, 23, of Mottram Close, North Somercotes, admitted driving without due care and attention, failing to stop after an accident and failing to report the accident when he appeared before magistrates on November 6.

The court heard Ross was driving a Vauxhall Astra when he lost control on a bend by the South Somercotes Post Office and Stores on July 14 at 8.10pm.

He crashed causing substantial damage to the building and stock inside. A wall was pushed four feet into the building.

Witnesses said the driver sped away, leaving part of the front of his car, including the registration number plate, embedded in the shop wall.

Ross was seen later with a man, said to be his father, trying to retrieve the bumper bar and registration plate but after an argument, left without it.

He was later seen by the police he told them the car locked as he negotiated the bend, and he panicked after the crash.

In defence, Gordon Holt said Ross’ father brought him back to retrieve the bumper bar to save on repair costs but when people came out of the building and started to argue, they left.

Ross received ten points on his licence, 300 hours of unpaid work and will pay £85 in costs.
