New data has revealed that East Lindsey is the third fattest area in England, with 73.8 per cent of residents in the district being overweight or obese. This figure is 10 per cent higher than the average across England, which stands at 63.8 per cent.
The new figures, published by Public Health England, show that East Lindsey ranks as the third most overweight in England, behind Copeland in Cumbria (75.9 per cent) and Doncaster in South Yorkshire (74.4 per cent).
Across the whole of Lincolnshire, 68.2 per cent of adults are overweight.
The statistics relate to the number of people in each area that have a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or more. People with a higher BMI than 25 are at increased risk of developing health problems.
Professor Kevin Fenton, director of health and wellbeing at Public Health England, said: “Many local authorities are already working hard to reduce obesity levels and these new data will help all local areas monitor their progress in tackling these long-standing problems.
“People who are overweight or obese have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers.
“Excess weight can also affect self-esteem and mental health. Overall, health problems associated with being overweight or obese cost the NHS over £5 billion each year.
“There is no silver bullet to reducing obesity; it is a complex issue that requires action at individual, family, local and national levels. We can all play our part in this by eating a healthy, balanced diet and being more active.”
Local fitness consultant, Jane Rylands-Bolton, said: “This news is of great concern, especially as NHS seems to be offering more bariatric surgery; a drastic response which, though it may bring relief to sufferers, doesn’t educate them into new healthy eating grooves.
“Losing weight is tough; it needs to be a positive experience to encourage people to stick at it.”
She added: “At Louth Slimming World, we are helping hundreds of local members lose weight healthily and without hunger. That’s what our Food Optimising plan offers; filling, everyday family food.”
