Praise for North Somercotes school’s ‘rapid improvement’

GOOD progress is being made at North Somercotes CE Primary School according to an Ofsted monitoring report, following the school being given notice to improve in its last full inspection in March.

An inspector visited the school in November to measure progress with a new leadership team and his report has graded the school as making good progress in all areas of improvement.

Staff and Governors say they are delighted with the outcome and will work ‘extremely hard to continue the improvements’ ready for a full inspection within the next year.

Headteacher Paul Floyd said: “The curriculum development has had a real impact. The children are really enthused with their topics and there are so many creative opportunities available to them.

“Staff have worked relentlessly to improve provision and as a result children are making far greater progress. We are all delighted but need to ensure the current level of progress continues.”

Kamila Abualzulof, Year 2 teacher at the school, said: “Our children are really enthusiastic about the new curriculum; it gives them the opportunity to express their various interests and to develop skills in creative ways. The children feel proud to talk about their learning and have a strong sense of ownership of our new curriculum.”

The inspector says pupils’ attainment in reading, writing and maths is rising, different groups of pupils, including those with special educational needs, are making good and improved progress in all year groups and that teaching is consistently good.

He says there are increased opportunities to develop creative talents and school leadership have been key drivers in rapid improvement.
