Two sixth form students from Monks’ Dyke Tennyson College did a sponsored abseil to raise funds for their World Challenge expedition to Morocco in the summer.
Keren Newlove and Laura Ruttle abseiled 80 feet into the River Wye from Millers Dale viaduct in Derbyshire.
Both girls signed up for the event in which Keren raised a magnificent £300 towards her fund and Laura’s World Challenge fund was boosted by £400. Their target for the trip to Morocco is £1,000 and both girls are nearing this.
Keren really enjoyed the experience and admitted that she would try it again but Laura was not so enthusiastic.
She said: “I was terrified when I was standing on the top of the bridge, I am not keen on heights and looking down into the water was the most frightening experience of my life. I wondered why I had signed myself up for it.”
Despite the fear, Laura managed the descent admirably, which took both girls approximately 10 minutes to reach the water below. The college congratulated them.
