They're creating lots of controversy and attention - the sprinkling of new-look beach huts on the Lincolnshire
It all started in 2005
BATHING Beauties is the theme of an exciting international competition to re-invent beach huts at Mablethorpe,
Sutton on Sea and Chapel St Leonards, to be launched this July.
Public artist, Michael Trainor, East Lindsey District Council's independent art consultant, is the man behind the scheme.
The project will initially affect the East Lindsey-owned beach huts and will be split into three competitions, which should finally come to fruition next summer.
Michael said: "This is all about re-inventing the great British bathing hut - and it's all going to begin in
Mablethorpe, Sutton on Sea and Chapel St Leonards. Beach huts first appeared in 1703 and have changed very little in almost 300 years."
Michael is hoping to see designs that will revolutionise the string of beach huts along the promenade and rejuvenate the towns' economy.
In September 2007 the huts began to appear
A SERIES of funky new beach huts have been unveiled along the promenade at Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea.
They were officially opened this weekend as part of the first ever Bathing Beauties Festival.
The new huts - which are said to re-imagine the beach hut for the 21st century - are Come Up and See Me, Jabba, Halcyon Hut, Eyes Wide sHut and Camera Obscura.
Four other new beach huts will be added at a later date – bringing the total along our stretch of coast from Mablethorpe to Sutton on Sea up to nine.
These are A Hut for Gazing and Canoodling, Oyster Pleasance and two yet to be picked from the shortlist of winning designs.
Mablethorpe's Business and Tourism manager Mike McDonald told the Leader that the beach hut festival is to become a yearly event in the town with plans already set for next year.
He said: "This is a way of broadening Mablethorpe's appeal to visitors while also retaining its charm for traditional holidaymakers."
