A FORMER Mablethorpe Cub and Scout Leader and guest house owner, Joan Nicholson, has died.

Joan, or ‘Akela’, ran the Mablethorpe Cubs from 1953 until 1971 and was the Cubs’ Assistant District Commissioner for Louth and District until 1982.

She died in Nottingham on Friday, March 9, aged 94.

Readers may remember her for running a Victoria Road guest house with her husband Frank.

After Frank died in 1990 she moved back to her home city of Nottingham, having lived in Mablethorpe nearly 50 years.

She was awarded the Cubs’ highest Silver Acorn at Windsor Castle in 1982, one of only two people in the district to be given the award in the 20th century.

Joan is survived by seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, the last being born in Canada just a few days before her death.
