A new future for annual Round Louth Walk

The annual Round Louth Walk, which has raised nearly £23,000 for good causes in its 14 years, has been handed over to new organisers.

The walk, which takes place every January from Hubbard’s Hills, was set up in 2000 by David Bolland, Jenny Crooks and Mike Preen, who have run it ever since.

But the three have decided to call it a day, and have handed over the running of the walk to MacMillan Cancer Support and St Andrew’s Children’s Hospice.

The walk was put on with the help of MacMillan this year, and raised money for the same cause. This year they raised a fantastic £1,700 on the day, and £2,039 after sponsorships had been tallied up, thanks to over 300 entrants.

The walk has also helped St Andrew’s in the past, in 2001, 2002 and 2003, raising nearly £4,000 in that time.

The two charities have been carefully selected as two good causes that give something locally, and their work on organising next year’s walk will soon begin.

David Bolland explained: “They showed to us that they’d got commitment which we really wanted them to prove, there was quite a lot of interest.

“They should have double the strength being two charities, they are two professional organisations and they should be able to get more walkers.

“I’d have thought 500 walkers should be easily in their reach, as we’re getting 300 now.

“There comes a time when you feel that you’ve done as much as you can to build up a project and then it’s time to hand it over, nothing lasts forever.

“It’s time for people to take it over who have got fresh ideas and I think you might find in ten years’ time it will be an event two or three times as big as it is now.”

Tanya Taylor, of MacMillan, added: “So many people have been touched by this walk. We’re delighted to take on this fantastic legacy, and we will continue to strive to do a good job.”
