ENGLAND women’s cricket captain Charlotte Edwards dropped into Louth’s Cordeaux School on Friday to give girls a masterclass in the sport as part of a new active project.

Charlotte, a veteran of over 200 England matches, taught girls the basics of the game at the launch of Future Females, an East Lindsey District Council inititative to get more young girls into sport.

Ably assisted by England Women’s Academy coach Lisa Keightley and the project’s lead coach Matt Crowther, Charlotte aims to help tackle the problem of obesity in young people by holding a number of school sessions in the coming months.

“The council are doing great things here,” she told the Leader.

“Female sport should be a priority and if one young girl takes up cricket as a result of our work then it’s positive.

“The town already has a great role model in Arran Brindle and hopefully that will inspire others to take part in sport.

“I’m really proud to be leading the way and helping to make a difference to these young girls’ lives.

“Matt’s already doing a great job and if we can mentor him then it’s a win-win for everyone.”

Up to 300 girls aged nine to 14 will be taught in the district between now and August through workshops, training camps and sports days.

With childhood obesity levels in East Lindsey currently above the national average, the council have acted quickly to try to get more youngsters to enjoy sport and lead active lives.

The project also benefits through the involvement of local cricket clubs, whose help keeps the scheme sustainable.

Coach Matt Crowther, who plays for Louth Cricket Club, said: “It’s fantastic to have Charlotte here and clearly it helps develop valuable links with our local clubs.”
