Louth charity day is a real close shave

Students at the Graduate Salon in Aswell Street in Louth held a special charity fun day to raise money for Cancer Research.

A brave student at the Graduate Salon in Louth will be feeling the chill that little bit more after she had her blonde locks shaved off for a good cause.

Seventeen-year-old Tasha Litchfield was inspired by a loved one to have her head shaved for Cancer Research during the salon’s charity fun day on February 6.

The salon, in Aswell Street, opened its doors for the day to raise money by holding a raffle, face painting, manicures and fun events.

But the ‘highlight’ was clearly Tasha’s fearless feat, which she was spurred on to do by her grandad Bernard Welborn, who has recently been diagnosed with three liver tumours.

Fellow student Kelly-Marie Williams started the head shave, before other students were given the chance to join in with the shaving.

Student Tasha, who lives in Holton le Clay, said afterwards: “It does feel weird, but I was actually looking forward to it as it is for such a good cause.

“Hopefully in four to six weeks it will start to grow back, it already feels cold!”

Salon manager Helen Razieh explained that the students had taken the initiative themselves.

“Most of them know someone who has been affected by cancer so they took it upon themselves to get everything organised.

“We have had lots of donations from local businesses, members of the public and our clients.”

As well as holding events through the day, the students at the salon run by the Grimsby Institute also dressed up for the cause.

Natalie Penn, a student at the salon, added: “We wanted to raise some money but also awareness, most of us have been affected by cancer in some way.

“The support from the local businesses in this area has been fantastic, like Mr Chips, Laking’s, Stephenson’s, Cats and Dogs, The Ranch and even McDonald’s.

“It has been hard work but it has been a real team effort and we have raised at least £300.”

The money raised on the day will go towards the ongoing search for cancer cures which Cancer Research do, with the long-term ambition of a time where cancer doesn’t have to be feared.
