A man single-handedly delivered his baby daughter after his pregnant girlfriend began to give birth at the roadside in Louth.

Neil Shaw, 35, was rushing his heavily pregnant partner, 29-year-old Poppy Rhodes, in their car towards the Diana Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby after her contractions began at their Louth home.

Poppy’s water had already broken by the time they passed St James’ Church, and by the time the couple had reached the Cordeaux Corner junction, near the Brackenborough Hotel, the baby was already on her way.

Neil pulled over and, following instructions from the emergency services on his mobile phone, he single-handedly delivered their baby daughter, Darcy Rose, within just four minutes.

An ambulance arrived a few minutes later and took them to the hospital, but
with 5lb 4oz baby Darcy and mother Poppy both in good health, the family were allowed back home the following evening.

Proud mother Poppy said: “I was in complete shock, and I kept telling Neil to just
drive - I was in denial that it was actually happening.

“When he delivered Darcy he was amazing, just fantastic. He seemed really confident and I’m incredibly proud of him. He was the hero of the hour!”

Neil, who owns NJS Plant Operator Hire Ltd, added: “I’m absolutely over the moon, and it was a sensational experience.

“I felt really nervous at the time, but at the same time I was confident because the lady on the
end of the phone was so helpful .

“She talked me through the whole thing, and she
was really brilliant - we
would like to get in touch with her.”

East Midlands Ambulance Service is currently looking at the possibility of setting up a reunion between the family and the call taker.
