A charity boat pull that has been run for 22 years by a group of holidaymakers will be held for the last time this Bank Holiday Monday.

A number of items have been pulled through the streets of Mablethorpe over the years ranging from beds, cars, boats and even an helicopter.

Thanks to this group’s hard work and dedication, almost £70,000 has been raised for the Mablethorpe RNLI.

Boat pull organiser, Barry Bisby, from Rotherham, has a caravan at Mermaid Caravan Park in Seaholme Road and a number of holidaymakers from all over the country frequently get together at the Mermaid Inn.

Barry said: “On Bank Holiday Monday (August 25), it will be the last time that the Mablethorpe Ramblers will be doing a boat pull from Ingoldmells to Mablethorpe in aid of Mablethorpe RNLI.

“Our first event was pulling a bed from Rotherham to Mablethorpe, which took us 14 and half hours – in that first year we raised £1,161 for the RNLI and from there, the Mermaid Ramblers were born.

“All good things must come to an end, but we have been lucky over the years to have raised between £65,000-£70,000.”

Barry added: “I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that has taken part over the years - we couldn’t have done it without you, especially Len Pegg, Rod Stone, Bill Tuplin, Justine Wright, the Lifeboat Crew and the Coastguard for their support.

“Lastly thank you to the holidaymakers and residents of Mablethorpe and the surrounding area for their generosity.

“We will still be holding the car boot sales on the Mermaid Inn car park in aid of the Mablethorpe Lifeboat Station – the last one for the year will be on Sunday August 24 and then we will start again next year.”

Helmsman for the Mablethorpe RNLI, Karen Cartwright said: “All of the crew really appreciate the efforts that Barry, his wife and the rest of the Mermaid Ramblers have gone to to raise such a fantastic amount of money for us over the years.

“They are all amazing and it’s thanks to them we have been able to buy equipment and clothing, enabling us to keep the lifeboats maintained and to assist with furthering our training.”

The Mermaid Ramblers aim to reach Mablethorpe Lifeboat Station at about 3.30pm, so pop along and see this historic boat pull come through the town for the final time.
