Up to 1,000 new homes and a new primary school could be the centrepieces of an enormous new development revealed for the edge of Louth.

A 94 hectare farmland site either side of Legbourne Road has been earmarked by Gladman Developments and landowners AR and MA Pridgeon, for between 800 and 1,000 new homes in the ‘first phase’.

Also included are a ‘local centre’ of shops, a community building, a health centre and a sports facility in what the plans describe as a ‘Louth southern gateway’.

The proposed new development would extend from south of Eresbie Road down to the roundabout at Kenwick Hill and Manby Road.

Estimations suggest an influx of new residents could increase the population of Louth from around 17,000 up to nearly 20,000.

The plans make reference to the building of a ‘sustainable community’ as well as a new primary school in order to meet an ‘increasingly acute’ need in Louth.

Louth Town Council were due to consult over the plans at their meeting on Tuesday night and the developers could shortly put forward an outline planning application.

ELDC have admitted there is a ‘significant shortage’ of affordable housing within the East Lindsey district and Prime Minister David Cameron has vowed to ‘get Britain building’ in a bid to beat the triple-dip recession.

However in December a 149-home development for farmland off Fulmar Drive in Louth was turned down due to fears of flooding.

Lincolnshire County Council said in their consultation letter: “Clearly such a large application will have a great deal of impact on schools in Louth and we have been previously consulted by the agent and provided some details on the scale of mitigation we would require - namely a new primary school.”

What do you make of the plans? Will the extra housing help ease the lack of homes in the area? Or do you feel the town would struggle to cope with the extra demand on services?
