Sheila Minns presiding at the monthly meeting of the Barkwith and district Gardeners Association welcomed 34 members including two who had joined recently taking the total membership to 52.
The well known gardening expert Harry Leach gave a very practical and interesting talk on lawns taking his audience through the full process of preparation, sowing, growing and continual care and maintenance.
Members were amazed at the many potential hazards including numerous pests and diseases and he summed up by saying ‘lawns are lovely, but they are very hard work’.
He answered many questions before being thanked by Vicki Hearsey for sharing his expertise and experience with the members as all look forward to better cared for lawns in the future.
Jane Perkins gained the points for showing the best flower of the month and tea and biscuits were served by Lyn Small and Pat Walker. Yvonne Bryson ran the raffle to give a boost to funds, Sheilah Fincham sold home made greetings cards and a reminder was given of the Spring Show to be held on Saturday April 12. Schedules are now available giving details of over 40 classes in five sections, flowers, produce, floral art, photography and handicrafts.
Les Robinson the coach outings organiser gave an update on the extensive range of visits he has organised which in addition to the many day trips includes a three day visit to Shropshire from May 28 to 30 and a five day visit to the Isle of Man from June 23 to 27.
