Barkwith gardeners welcome their 50th member at social

The weather was kinder when the Barkwith and District Gardeners Association held their annual new year social which had had to be cancelled earlier due to the difficult travelling conditions.

Sheila Minns welcomed everyone and during the evening Jean Thompson was delighted to enrol the 50th member.

Les Robinson added a touch of humour with his entertaining poem The Common Cold before he gave details of the outings he is organising on behalf of the club which are proving so popular. Seats need to be booked well in advance as there is always a demand but Les operates a waiting list as there are inevitably a few people who have to drop out for various reasons. Contact him on 01673 857063 if you want to know more.

Quiz winners Kate Wright and Alec Small.

Shirley Booth had potted snowdrops and aconites which she sold and donated the proceeds to club funds and Yvonne Bryson organised and ran a very successful tombola which also gave a boost to the Gardeners funds.

A delicious cheese and wine buffet supper with a varied selection of cheeses, biscuits, pates and bread rolls had been prepared and donated by the committee members and this was enjoyed with glasses of wine together with tea and coffee served by Lyn Small and Grace Clark. The supper was rounded off with the remaining slices of the fortieth anniversary cake which had been preserved for what proved to be a very happy and successful social evening.

Packets of vegetable seeds were available at very reasonable prices and the chairman announces that the schedules for the spring show would be available at the next meeting when there will be advice given on growing vegetables.
