Big Ben appears
at town college
Students have visited Big Ben, the Shard and the Eiffel Tower - without leaving Louth!
Cordeaux’s Y7 Engineering Group were asked as part of their term three project homework to choose a man-made structure of their choice, research it and then make a model of it using a wide range of materials and building techniques that they have been studying over the past eight weeks.
Miss Lord, Design and Technology teacher, was overwhelmed by the response from the whole class and delighted to see just how much time and effort the pupils displayed in both their presentations and models.
Brandon Tucker made the Eiffel Tower, Jack Turner made the Shard, Jack Willis created the Humber Bridge, Caitlin Rimmer recreated the Gherkin, Megan Walker made a pyramid, Rachel Parry made Stonehenge and Savannah Venters made Big Ben.
Eiffel Tower facts: Built in 1889 as the entrance arch to the 1889 World’s Fair, it has become a global icon.
It is the tallest structure in Paris and the most-visited paid monument in the world.
The tower stands 320 metres tall. It held the record for the tallest man-made structure in the world until beaten by the Chrysler Building in New York in 1930.
It has featured in many movies, including the James Bond film A View to a Kill.
Humber Bridge facts: The bridge opened to traffic in 1981 and is the sixth-largest of its type in the world.
It spans the Humber between Barton-upon-Humber on the south bank and Hessle on the north bank.
Big Ben facts: Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock in the Palace of Westminster in London.
The name is used to refer to the clock and the clock tower.
The tower was completed in 1858 and has become a symbol of London.
It has featured in many films over the years including The 39 Steps, V for Vendetta, the World is Not Enough and it was destroyed by a giant monster in the 1960s movie Gorgo.
The Shard facts: This 95 storey skyscraper is London’s newest iconic building.
It opened to the public this month and is the tallest building in the EU and the second-tallest free standing structure in the UK.
The UK’s highest viewing gallery and open-air observation deck is on the 72nd floor offering amazing views.
