A talented local chef was just pipped to the post of the final of BBC Two show MasterChef: The Professionals.

Tom Morrell impressed the judges throughout the process, making it through to final week.

However he was knocked out just before the final.

Tom is the son of Sue Rice of the Ark Animal Rescue and Retirement Home at North Somercotes.

She said she was thrilled and proud that Tom did so well in the tough competition.

Tom trained at Grimsby College and has worked at the Manor Hotel near Bath.

He is currently working in Geneva, cokking for the directors of Rolex.

Sue said: “I always told him, ‘Go for it’.”

MasterChef: The Professionals saw chefs put through their paces under the expert gaze of double Michelin starred chef Michel Roux Jr, Monica Galetti and presenter Gregg Wallace.

In Tom’s final episode the finalists had to create two exceptional plates of food, but this time from kitchen scraps.

In this Invention Test with a difference gone were the array of quality ingredients they are used to cooking with and instead the judges ask them to make their dishes from left overs including meat bones, chicken carcasses, fish trimmings, vegetable peelings, stale croissants and bread and overripe fruit.

Gregg Wallace said: “Every Professional MasterChef competition throws up some amazing chefs.” Michel Roux Jr said: “This is a very tough competition, a competition where we expect the best.”

Thirty two chefs started out in the competition.
