Child poverty statistics make stark reading for East Lindsey

Up to one in three children in the Louth area are living below the poverty line, new research has revealed.
The Campaign to End Child Poverty published figures last week showing that 20.2 per cent of British children are classified as below the poverty line before housing costs.
The poorest constituency for children was Manchester Central, with nearly half (47 per cent) of children living in poverty.
The results for the Louth area are as follows:
Alford - 23 per cent
Binbrook - 13 per cent
Grimoldby - 13 per cent
Holton le Clay - 7 per cent
Legbourne - 8 per cent
Ludford - 12 per cent
Marshchapel - 11 per cent
North Holme ward, Louth - 21 per cent
North Somercotes - 11 per cent
North Thoresby - 7 per cent
St Michael’s ward, Louth - 13 per cent
Skidbrooke with Saltfleet Haven - 12 per cent
Tetney - 9 per cent
Trinity ward, Louth - 35 per cent
Commenting on the figures, Enver Solomon, Chair of the End Child Poverty campaign said: “The child poverty map reveals the depth and breadth of child poverty across the country showing the gross levels of inequality that children face in every region.
“Far too many children whose parents are struggling to making a living are having to go hungry and miss out on the essentials of a decent childhood that all young people should be entitled to.
“The huge disparities that exist across the country have become more entrenched and are now an enduring reality as many more children are set to become trapped in long term poverty and disadvantage.”
Lincolnshire County Council’s assistant director of children’s services, Meredith Teasdale, said plans are in place to address the issue.
“Overall, our child poverty figures for 0-19 year olds are 16.7 per cent which is below the national average of 20.6 per cent,” she said.
“The council is taking steps to tackle child poverty. The economic environment in this area provides particular challenges for families and children.
“With agriculture and tourism a major contributor to the job market, there is a relative lack of permanent, year round employment.
“So we are working with agencies in the county to remove barriers to well-paid employment for people, reduce the impact of low income and support the high number of families who move into this area for the summer months.
“The council is working on a Child Poverty Action Plan and has already ensured sufficient, affordable childcare places are available.”
Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea have been revealed to be among the most poverty stricken areas in East Lindsey.
Figures show that 40 per cent of 0-19 year olds in the Mablethorpe North Ward are ‘in child poverty’, below only Ingoldmells (42 per cent) in the East Lindsey district.
Nearby Sutton on Sea South recorded 38 per cent, with the immediate surrounding areas all showing scores over 30 per cent.
