Concerns over beach hut future for the coast

Is a tendering process the right step forward for beach huts on the coast?

Concerns have been raised over the future of beach huts in Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea which could see them be destroyed if no-one is found to take them on.

During the recent full meeting of East Lindsey District Council on July 23, it was recommended that the three sets of beach huts in the two towns be turned over to a tendering process where they will be privatised and then be leased out for rent to the holiday-makers.

There are 70 beach rental huts altogether, 30 are in Sutton on Sea and the rest at the Central Promenade and Queen’s Park in Mablethorpe.

The real concern lies within the future of these beach huts and if a buyer for these iconic chalets is not found, then they might be lost.

District Councillor Stephen Palmer, who oversees the Sutton on Sea North Ward, believes that if no-one is found to take the beach huts on, then the next step forward would be detrimental to the two areas.

He explains: “There were a number of different options that would put forward in the meeting regarding the future for these beach huts.

“I really hope that someone can be found to take on these beach huts as the next step if no-one can be found is to consider knocking them down and this is my main concern.

“For Sutton on Sea, there isn’t as much here as in other places and the beach huts are something we do not want to lose, they are an iconic influence for the area and the town would lose its uniqueness if they were gone.”

A spokesman for East Lindsey District Council added: “Councillors voted to accept the report from the scrutiny committee that was discussed at the recent full council meeting on July 23.

“It has been asked that it now goes forward the portfolio holder, Coun Grist to consider the recommendation to tender the council’s beach rental chalets on a long lease to start in time for the 2015 season.

“The tender would see the chalets at all three sites in Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea continue to operate as day/week rental beach huts.

“We are hopeful that a tenant may be found given that some chalets are already leased out.

“If not, however, the Overview Committee will discuss the other options.”
