Council leader Hill moves to reassure county

The vote to leave the EU was no surprise but 'life will go on', according to the Leader of Lincolnshire County Council.

After signing up to a letter “urging the good people” of Lincolnshire to Vote Leave, Coun Martin Hill said the county would deal with the impact of “Brexit”.

Coun Hill said: “I’m not in the least bit surprised by the result as it was pretty clear talking to people that there was going to be a very strong exit vote.

“The message for us is that we were in tune with the people, but nobody is saying ‘we’re going to stop immigration’.

“Life will go on, businesses will keep trading and farmers will keep farming.

“There will be changes but the long-term future of agriculture, not just in Lincolnshire but elsewhere as well, is very strong because there are millions of mouths to feed.”

But after Boston, including Algarkirk, Bicker and Fosdyke, registered the largest vote (75.6 per cent) in favour of an EU exit anywhere in the UK, MP Matt Warman said: “Britain has decided to gamble on Brexit, while I personally took the view that it wasn’t a risk I wanted to take.

“I very much respect the will of voters in our region and across the country, (but) we have a long road ahead of us.

“Changes won’t be seen overnight but I look forward to working with colleagues from Lincolnshire, and within Government, to make sure that the inevitable uncertainty does not cause the predicted economic damage to people’s jobs and livelihoods.”
