Duo are saved by Mablethorpe RNLI in ship fire rescue drama

Two men who had to abandon their ship were saved when fire took hold of their vessel off the coast of Mablethorpe.

On Saturday night Mablethorpe’s lifeboat crew were paged by Yarmouth coastguard following reports of a fishing vessel on fire with two crew on board at the entrance to Saltfleet Haven.

Both inshore lifeboats at the station launched at 6.50pm, the D class William Hadley and the larger Atlantic 75 Joan Mary.

When the lifeboat crews approached the fishing vessel Hunter, the crew had abandoned ship and got into their life raft as the fire had taken hold of the vessel quickly.

They fired a red flare to help the lifeboat crews find them as quickly as possible.

The two casualties were brought back to Mablethorpe RNLI station where an ambulance was waiting to treat one of the men for shock and cold. Both men were later released and are well.

Shaun Riggall, senior helmsman at Mablethorpe RNLI station, praised his crew for a job well done. He said: “RNLI volunteers train every week to make sure when the call comes, they are ready to respond to any emergency at sea.

“In this case the two fishermen did all the right things and we were able to bring them safely back to shore within a matter of minutes”
