Farm to Fork launch at Louth Park Farms with Kidgate pupils

With people increasingly aware of where the food they buy comes from the official opening of a new Louth facility is very timely.

TV chef Rachel Green and pupils from Kidgate Primary School helped The Co-operative and Lincolnshire Co-operative launch its learning experience From Farm to Fork at Louth Park Farms.

The new centre, built following a £60,000 investment, features a classroom, kitchen and outdoor learning area.

It will be used by pupils from schools from across the region to learn about healthy living and they will also get out on to the surrounding arable farmland to hear how food is grown and find out how to prepare healthy meals.

To help launch the centre Rachel Green, a farmer’s daughter from Lincolnshire, whose TV appearances have included BBC3’s Kill It! Cook It! Eat It! and The One Show, gave Kidgate pupils Oliver Hutchinson, Alex Bell, Lily Holmes, Ann-Marie Wootton and Zal Barber a hands-on lesson in how to make healthy pizzas from scratch using ingredients from Co-operative farms and food stores.

Sarah Klueter, who heads up The Co-operative’s Green Schools Revolution programme, of which From Farm to Fork is a key part, said: “We are pleased to officially launch our new From Farm to Fork project at Louth, which will provide excellent educational facilities and learning opportunities for schools across Lincolnshire and beyond.

“This scheme has not only provided significant investment and created two new jobs in Louth, but it will also give children an experience of the great outdoors, as well as a greater understanding of farming and where their food comes from.”

The Co-operative Farms, part of The Co-operative Group, manages and contract farms several operations covering a 15 mile radius of Louth Park, which grow vining peas, wheat, barley and oilseed rape.

Sam Turner, Lincolnshire Co-operative’s Membership and Community Manager, said: “We work with lots of local schools and we know teachers and pupils like getting out of the classroom and learning in new environments. The scheme will also deliver an important message about the provenance of food, which we’re working hard to promote with our Love Local range.”

The From Farm to Fork project is part of The Co-operative’s Green Schools Revolution, a sustainability education programme available to all schools in the UK. The programme brings together a host of learning materials and practical opportunities to help teachers, parents and children take care of the environment in a fun and active way.

From learning about where food comes from, to visiting a wind farm and setting up a walking bus, the breadth of activities and resources are designed to bring environmental learning to life, and inspire the next generation of green pioneers.
