Floods of support for Meridale exhibition

Floods of support in excess of 2,000 people stepped back in time to remember the 1953 East Coast Floods at a flood exhibition at Sutton on Sea.
The Meridale Centre have hosted this unique event over three days and organisers have been ‘overwhelmed’ by the support it has received.
This is the only exhibition that has been organised of its kind along the East Coast and had taken nearly two years to put together.
Event organiser John Monk was caught up in the 1953 floods himself, which saw the loss of people 42 people on the East Coast alone.
John said: “Throughout our three day event, we have had nearly 2,000 people walk through the door to see our exhibition.
“Many stories have been told and the event as a whole has been beautiful and we have been very fortunate.”
The exhibition had been set out in a clockwise fashion, giving visitors a real experience of seeing each stage of the flood as it happened.
It takes you on a journey to the start of how the coast’s beauty looked before the flooding took place, right up to the devastation caused by the flooding and the aftermath of the damage that had been done.
John was only five years old at the time of the floods and ten years ago put on an exhibition also to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the floods.
John added: “In comparison to the last exhibition that was held ten years ago, our 60th anniversary exhibition had had a lot more interest and attention.
“Now I ask myself if I can find anywhere to make the exhibition better, especially now the survivors are becoming less and less.
“Organising this exhibition took nearly two years, but it was worth all the hard work and I must commend the help from Mark Nicholson and Anne Poynton.”
