Louth butchers Lakings of Louth has qualified for the BPEX National Championships in June for the first time, after wowing judges with their new creation - the ‘Harvest Pie’.

The pie, which contains pork, chutney and apple, won a gold award and was given an incredible 100 per cent rating at the BPEX Midlands Regional Roadshow last Wednesday (March 5) in Newark.

It was crowned the overall winner, beating stiff competition from hundreds of other entries across the whole of the Midlands.

Lakings of Louth won 11 other awards including two more golds, six silvers, and three bronzes.

The two other gold awards were gained for the stuffed chine and the ‘Breakfast Pie’, another original invention.

Manager Chris Smith said: “We are thrilled to have been crowned overall champion at this year’s awards. We’ve won category awards in the past, but this is fantastic!”

Owner John Laking said: “I am delighted with our awards. We have entered every year and we always win some, but you don’t expect to do this!

“Louth is an amazing place for butchers, with Meridian Meats and Trevor Fairburn too.

“I have been a butcher here for 64 years, it’s been my life - and I enjoy it.”

The ‘Harvest Pie’ has gone on sale at Lakings this week, with a introductory price of £2.50.
