Lasting memorial on coast is solid as a rock

As blustery winds spread along the coast, floods of residents gathered at Mablethorpe’s promenade to see the grand unveiling of a commemorative memorial rock.
Thursday, January 31, marked the 60th anniversary of the 1953 floods where Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea were amongst the worst affected communities, with 42 lives lost.
As a lasting memorial that will stand the test of time, a six tonne Norwegian granite rock with commemorative plaque has been placed on Mablethorpe’s North Promenade and was blessed with water from the North Sea.
The memorial has been made from rock that made up the sea defences that once stood on the coast 60 years ago.
Helen Parkhurst, former Mayor of Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea, raised funds for the memorial as part of her civic engagements in 2010.
She said: “I would like to thank all those people who have made this memorial possible for the community, including Robert Howell, who transported the rock to its resting place.
“The memorial rock will provide a lasting memorial to those who lost their lives in the 1953 floods.”
Current Mayor of Mablethorpe and Sutton, Joyce Taylor added: “January 31 was a chance for the community to reflect on what happened in 1953 and to commemorate those who sadly lost their lives.”
Residents that survived the floods, were presented with a special commemorative medal after the ceremony.
Prior to the memorial’s unveiling, a service took place at Dunes Theatre on the seafront.
