Lincolnshire Sausage protection bid spurned again
A second bid to protect the Lincolnshire Sausage has been turned by the Government today (Thursday).
The Lincolnshire Sausage Association were originally turned down in May in their attempt to get the famous sausage Protected Geographical Indication status, and launched an appeal against the verdict. That would have meant only sausages made in the county and to a set recipe could use the name.
But DEFRA (Department for Food and Rural Affairs) have once again turned down the attempt, again claiming there was ‘no enduring link’ between the product and location.
Food and Farming Minister David Heath said: “We fully support protecting the local heritage of certain foods through PGI status.
“But to be eligible products must have an enduring link with a specific area.
“The evidence provided by the Lincolnshire Sausage Association did not demonstrate this and the new information provided in its appeal has not persuaded us to change our decision to reject the application.
“We remain open to looking at other options which would allow producers in Lincolnshire to highlight the traditional and local nature of their sausages.”
Janet Godfrey, Chairman of the Lincolnshire Sausage Association, said: “We are extremely disappointed and are taking further legal advice as to our next steps.”
