Final plans for a controversial £50million development for Mablethorpe, including housing and a supermarket, could be submitted within weeks.

Lindum Developments were given outline approval in March to build 180 new homes, a petrol station, supermarket, pub, restaurant and care home on land off Golf Road.

Director of Lindum Developments Ltd, Paul McSorley, hinted to the Leader that the final proposal is ‘very close’ to being submitted to East Lindsey District Council.

The application was passed back in March this year after initially being rejected in December 2011.

Since then the government approved the plans and Mr McSorley added that the time in between ‘has not been wasted’.

Mr McSorley explained: “We are very close to having the final planning application drawn-up.

“We know it has been a long time, but this time has not been wasted and we are continuing discussions with the Environment Agency.”

Discussions are also ongoing as to which retailer might take on the supermarket site.

Local residents set up rival campaigns, both for and against the development when the word of the plans first came about.

Supporters expressed views that the proposal would provide vital jobs and investment for the local economy and handed in a petition with 1,400 names in support to the local authority.

Those who opposed the plans argued the fear of flood damage to nearby housing and the potential impact on the town centre, specifically on independent businesses.

Lindum has said that the development of the 30 acre site will take five years to complete, should the final plans be approved.

It is also believed the final application could provide a further 300 long term jobs for the town through a supermarket and restaurant.
