Louth’s economy ‘cannot provide the new jobs’ required by an influx of residents on a potential new housing development, a group has warned.
Keep Louth Special, who formed in 2008, has described the initial plans for up to 1,000 new homes on land either side of Legbourne Road as ‘an opening gambit in a game of chess’ and said any final site would be much smaller than the proposals suggest.
Gladman Developments and AR and MA Pridgeon have earmarked a 94-hectare site on the southern edge of Louth for the new homes, a new school, shops and health centre.
But Keep Louth Special insist Louth would not cope with such an influx of residents.
“Any final site, if approved at all, is likely to be a fraction of the size simply because the local economy cannot provide the new jobs required,” they said.
“KLS would like to be sure that no development swamps existing roads, schools or drainage facilities, a particular worry in this location, and that cycle routes, pedestrian access to town, affordable housing and open spaces are all planned and paid for by developers at the outset. Any new developments need to have the same feeling of community as the rest of the town.”
Globe Developments, who are overseeing the application, said: “It is envisaged the site could be developed as a southern ‘gateway’ to Louth providing up to 1,000 dwellings with a site for a new primary school, community facilities, new areas of informal public open space and good direct footpath and cycleway links.
“There’s also the possibility of providing a new employment area that would best serve the south side of the town and its hinterland.
“Inevitably as the scheme and ideas progress there is likely to be a lot of local interest and it is certainly intended there should be opportunity for such input to help shape the details of the proposal.”
