Louth Documentary Film Festival

MOVE over Cannes, Venice, Berlin and London! Louth will be rolling out the red carpet for its very own film festival next week.

Louth Film Club is hosting a Documentary Film Festival at the Playhouse Cinema, running for four nights from Monday September 17 to Thursday 20.

Highlighting the recent surge in popularity of big-screen documentaries, the club is showing five of the best such films, two of them in a double bill.

Non-members will be welcome, paying the normal Playhouse Cinema ticket prices and both members and non-members can benefit from a special two-for-the-price-of-one offer: buy a ticket for one screening and you can get into a second one free.

The festival schedule is as follows, all screenings starting at 7.30pm:

Monday September 17: Waste Land (PG). Lucy Walker’s extraordinary record, touching and ultimately uplifting, of an art project involving ‘pickers’ at the world’s largest rubbish dump, outside Rio de Janeiro.

Tuesday September 18 (double bill): Way Of The Morris (12A). A poignant exploration of Morris dancing, on a journey from an English village to the battlefields of the Somme. Sound It Out (12A). An optimistic portrait of the last surviving vinyl record shop in Teesside and the community that keeps it alive.

Wednesday September 19: Project Nim (12A). The acclaimed account of a young chimpanzee being brought up like a human infant, raising uneasy questions about the ethics of such an experiment.

Thursday September 20: The Boy Mir — 10 Years In Afghanistan (PG). Phil Grabsky’s moving and revealing film about a boy growing up in Afghanistan and letting neither war nor his dysfunctional family quash his spirit.
