Louth flood prevention work on track
THE MAJOR £7.3 million flood alleviation scheme for Louth is on track to be completed in 2015.
Two reservoirs are to be built outside the town to collect water from the Wolds and stop the town’s river from flooding.
A report to Lincolnshire County Council said: “Meetings have been held with the landowners who will be directly affected by the proposals. The outcome from these meetings has been positive allowing investigations at the two reservoir sites to commence.”
The report says there is a one in 20 chance of the main river in Louth flooding in any year.
But following the construction of the reservoirs that chance would drop to one in 100.
Louth suffered terrible floods in 2007, when many homes and businesses were damaged.
At the time locals called for action to stop it ever happening again.
The report says Louth has been identified as a high priority for flood alleviation.
l Meanwhile, the Environment Agency has warned the recent downpours have increased the risk of flash flooding in the county.
They say the drought has made soil dry and compacted which means rain water is less easily absorbed into the ground, and so ‘any future storms could lead to a greater risk of flash flooding’.
Craig Woolhouse, Environment Agency head of flood incident management, said: “As the drought in England continues, the thought of flooding may be far from people’s minds, but we cannot ignore the risk.
“Dry and compacted ground means that there is a greater risk of flash flooding if there is heavy rainfall, and stormy seas and high tides can produce floods at any time.”
