Louth man Steve set to represent UK in European competition

Steve Winter has the toned physique that most men in their early 20s would be proud of. But at 42, he is proving that you can still be in peak condition even after hitting the early 40s.

Steve has been training weights for the last 20 years and has had previous successes in modelling contests and bodybuilding competitions, with two top three placings in the Natural Physique Association (NPA) national qualifiers.

But away from the circuit he is a Senior Chief Weapons Engineer in the Royal Navy and despite qualifying for two British finals, work and family commitments have always been his priority.

But this year Steve has digressed from bodybuilding to physique and recently wowed the stage in Liverpool after he gained first place in the United Kingdom Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (UKBFF) Masters (over 40s) Physique class (a drugs tested competition).

A delighted and still in shock Steve told the Leader: “I am so overwhelmed and amazed to have been placed at number one.

“I decided to compete again after two years away from the stage, as I felt I had not fully achieved what I wanted. It was unfinished business, gaining that elusive first place.

“I dieted for 15-weeks to get into my peak condition and it gets more difficult as you get older, your metabolism slows down and you have more commitments in life, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

To Steve’s shock, thanks to his recent win, he has now been selected to be part of the UKBFF team to represent this country in the International Federation Bodybuilding (IFBB) European Championships. Set to take place in two weeks time in Spain.

Steve added: “To win in Liverpool was very emotional and I felt elated. But never in a million years did I think I would be representing the UK at 42-years-old overseas in an international competition.

“If it wasn’t for the support of my amazing wife Samantha and my family, I wouldn’t have been able to get to where I am now. My son Thomas who is seven is very excited about my next competition and it’s a double joy for me as I am soon to be a father again to a daughter, Charlotte, in just a couple of months time.”
