Louth printworks demolition blocked by councillors

A controversial proposal by Allinson’s Print and Supplies to redevelop a site in Queen Street in Louth has been refused by East Lindsey District Council’s planners.

The firm applied to demolish the existing buildings - which are in the conservation area and are in parts nearly 200 years old - in favour of constructing eight new town houses.

Although senior planning officer Andy Allen recommended approval, councillors turned down the application after noting objections from organisations such as Louth Civic Trust and the Victorian Society who emphasised the importance of the buildings to the heritage of the town.

There was also a letter from a resident who pointed out that they provided a nesting habitat for swifts - a summer migrant which is in breeding decline in the UK, but fears had previously been raised that parts of the building could collapse.

Prior to the discussion getting underway, planning committee member Coun Jill Makinson-Sanders, mayor of Louth, revealed that Allinson’s printed her Christmas cards, but she said this was a non-significant interest.
