Mablethorpe could lose Royal Mail delivery office to cuts
Mablethorpe's Royal Mail delivery office in Somersby Avenue looks set to close under the firm's plans to transfer their operations to their Alford base.
ROYAL Mail look set to close Mablethorpe’s delivery office and relocate all operations to Alford, the Leader can reveal.
It is understood the site in Somersby Avenue, where the final stages of sorting take place before delivery and also the collection point for undelivered mail, may shut with the staff force of 25 relocated nine miles away to Alford from September.
Royal Mail have confirmed that ‘a scoping exercise’ is taking place to look at the possible move.
However, just three weeks ago the company said they had ‘no firm plans’ regarding the Mablethorpe site after rumours were rife that the site would close.
It is understood that postal delivery workers would share a van to transport the mail to the Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea area each day.
It is believed that all staff have been informed but jobs are not in danger of being cut, as Royal Mail operate a ‘no compulsory redundancy policy’.
Royal Mail spokesperson Morag Turnbull said the company needed to respond to ‘declining mail volumes and increasingly tough trading conditions’ which have seen a 25 per cent decrease in mail volumes in recent years.
“Royal Mail constantly reviews the operational efficiency and commercial practicality of all its units,” she said.
“As part of our business-wide modernisation programme, we are currently undertaking one of the biggest transformations in UK industry.
“At this stage we are simply considering our options and have made no final decision regarding our operation at Mablethorpe.
“However, we have shared our plans for this scoping exercise with our people and will continue to work with them and the unions in the future.”
Royal Mail say customers can arrange redelivery of undelivered mail free of charge.
A final decision on the future of the delivery office will be made in the coming months.
